Cats living above the Sydney Harbour Bridge (1967) | RetroFocus

These four-legged residents of the south-east pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge were once a tourist attraction. The Pylon Lookout had closed to the public during World War II, and when it reopened, its manager Yvonne Rentoul installed a cattery in the rooftop garden. During the day, the cats wandered around the pylon, enjoying some of the best views in Sydney. The cats kept watch over a wishing well, and even had their own merry-go-round. The lease on the lookout was up for renewal in 1971, at which time Mrs Rentoul and her cats moved out.
This vision was filmed for the ABC children’s program ‘Play School’ in 1967 (exact date of transmission unknown).
