Active implantable medical devices refer to the active medical devices which are intended to be either partially or totally introduced medically or surgically into the human body and which remain in the human body after the procedure. The growing adoption of the neurostimulation technology is one of the key factors driving the demand for these devices. The neurostimulation technology employs the use of microelectrodes for activating nerves in the body. The size of a neurostimulation device is similar to that of a stopwatch and it is powered by a battery.

This device is surgically implanted in the brain and assists in generating paresthesia, which is a tingling sensation, at scheduled time intervals. By developing a sensation in the damaged nerves, these electric signals help medical practitioners treat neurological diseases and chronic pain. For treating chronic pain, these electrical signals block the transmission of pain messages from the nerves to the brain. Neurostimulation devices are usually used in cases when drug-based treatment procedures are not effective.

The organization also found that these diseases are the leading cause of deaths across the world. Furthermore, the organization reported that out of the 17 million premature deaths or deaths under the age of 70 caused because of noncommunicable illnesses in 2019, as much as 38% were caused by cardiovascular diseases. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators, which include subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillators and transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillators, neurostimulators, implantable cardiac pacemakers, implantable hearing devices, ventricular assist devices, and implantable heart monitors/insertable loop recorders are the most widely used active implantable medical devices across the world.

Out of these, the demand for implantable cardioverter defibrillators was found to be the highest in the world in 2016, as per the market research company, P&S Intelligence. This was because of the high incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillators, that include dual-chamber implantable cardioverter defibrillators, single-chamber implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and biventricular implantable cardioverter defibrillators, were widely preferred by people over the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillators, in 2016.

In the coming years, the demand for neurostimulators, particularly deep brain stimulators, is expected to surge sharply. This will be because of the rising incidence of chronic pain such as pain because of diabetes, pain from injury, arthritis pain, and neuropathic pain all over the world. Abbott Laboratories, Boston Scientific Corporation, and Medtronic plc are the major companies operating in the active implantable medical devices market. These organizations are increasingly focusing on partnerships, collaborations, and product innovations to augment their revenue.
