The gallery specializes in sculpture, paintings, and decorative arts from the Indian subcontinent created over a span of more than 2,500 years. Unique artworks were created both for spiritual and courtly purposes in Tibet, Nepal, India, Thailand, Burma, and Indonesia. Many different interpretations of the religious iconography of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Islam are depicted in sculpture rendered from stone, bronze, and wood, painting on cloth and paper, and finely-crafted objects for imperial and ritual use often adorned with gold, silver, and precious stones.
