In May of 1993 the first 5,000 copies were pulled from the presses and distributed to local households. Even at a modest 16 pages, that first issue was tough to fill. A couple of paying advertisers along with the use of large fonts and double-spacing helped the cause, but certainly there was room for the Arcadia News to grow.
In late 1997, area resident Greg Bruns dropped into the Arcadia News office with some writing samples, looking for a job. While he was surprised to be brought on board as the new humor writer, Greg was more excited to hear that he would be paid for his column, "Straight Up with a Twist." Greg later joined the paper's team, helping with sales and design. At the end of 2001, the owners sold the paper to Greg.
A few years later, Greg and his wife Jennifer remodeled a building on the corner of 39th Street and Indian School Road, and after months of hard work, unveiled the new Arcadia News building. The office was then moved from its long-standing location at 48th Street & Thomas Road.
The Arcadia News has a long history of supporting the community, providing over $15,000 in cash scholarships to Arcadia High School graduating seniors, and internships for student-journalists and digital artists. They have also sponsored community events like the "Team Taylor Arcadia Family Fun Run," along with functions and auctions to benefit area schools including Arcadia High, Ingleside Middle School, Tavan, Hopi Elementary, and Echo Canyon.
The paper has won over 150 design and editorial awards since entering their first industry competition in 2009. These awards are specific to the paper’s unique and original photography, design, stories and news. The awards have been bestowed from industry peers at the Arizona Press Club and the Association of Community Publishers.
The Arcadia News is family-owned and operated, for Arcadia residents, by Arcadia residents. In 2021, Greg won the Association of Community Publishers prestigious "Publisher of the Year" award for his volunteerism and support of the industry organization.
Going forward, we are dedicated to being the good news newspaper, owned and operated by Arcadians, for the incredible community of Arcadia.
