Our History
Brown Funeral Home has a long and proud tradition of serving the families of the North Country since 1892.

Originally founded by Eugene J. Brown in 1892, the original location was on City Hall Place. After a fire, Mr. Brown moved to the second location on Bridge Street in Plattsburgh. Around 1910, a second fire necessitated Mr. Brown to move the funeral home to its current location at 29 Broad Street, where he constructed a very large and modern funeral home. Brown Funeral Home, Inc. continues to be the oldest continually operated business in Clinton County.

Eugene Brown began his career in funeral service after first being a U.S. Customs Agent, riding the train between Plattsburgh and Montreal. While in Montreal he began his studies in undertaking and embalming. Upon returning to Plattsburgh, he opened Eugene Brown and Son, Funeral Home. He was the only embalmer north of Albany.

Eugene Brown was joined by his two sons, Eugene J. Brown Jr. and Leo Brown. In 1931, Harold Webb joined the funeral home staff. Harold Webb was not only known as a funeral director but was also a City Councilman and City Supervisor (Mayor).

The Brown Family sold the funeral home in 1964 to two of its employees, Norman F. Jabaut and Nicholas A. Pope. Norman Jabaut began his career at the funeral home shortly after returning home from World War II. He became a licensed funeral director in 1951 and later on President of the Brown Funeral Home, Inc., until his retirement in 1989. Nicholas Pope began his career at the funeral home as a general laborer, eventually becoming a licensed funeral director and President until his retirement in 1995.

In 1977 Norman Jabaut was joined by his son, Jeffrey Jabaut. Jeffrey became a licensed funeral director and later on President of Brown Funeral Home, Inc. until his retirement in 2009. In 1980, Warren J. Bennett began his career at Brown Funeral Home, Inc in 1980. Warren is currently President of Brown Funeral Home, Inc. and a licensed funeral director. Warren started his career as an employee, working his way to eventually become the owner today.

Brown Funeral Home, Inc. also operates community funeral homes in Altona, 3123 Miner Farm Road and in Cadyville, 3 Park Row.

In 2006, Brown Funeral Home, completed a total renovation of the 29 Broad Street location. The renovation has provided us with larger chapels, more seating, increased privacy for families choosing non-public funeral services, handicap accessibility and a modern arrangement center.

In the fall of 2008, the Bennett Family of Brown Funeral Home began a plan to better serve families in the North Country. This started with the opening of Adirondack Memorials and Granite Works next door to our Plattsburgh office. For the first time in our history we are able to offer monuments and memorials. This ensures that the same Funeral Director is with the family every step of the way.  By 2010 Adirondack Memorials had grown again, only this time with the addition of burial and cremation vaults.

In 2013 Brown Funeral Home, once again, made a large leap forward with addition of Mountain View Crematory. With Brown Funeral Home being the only true, Full Service Funeral Home in the North Country. Families loved ones never leave our care, we think that is very important.

In 2019, we opened a whole new facility to handle the fur-family members when we opened Adirondack Pet Cremation Service in Plattsburgh. This is a new facility strictly for the cremation of pets allowing Brown Funeral Home to be able to help ALL Members of the family.
