He has conducted numerous risk assessments, statutory inspections, and safety reviews of tailings storage facilities. His skill set includes modeling embankment behavior and deformation under both static and pseudo-static loading conditions, as well as evaluating the potential for tailings liquefaction.
Jean-François St-Laurent has performed extensive seepage assessments in both saturated and unsaturated mediums and has modeled heat transfer through conduction, advection, and convection mechanisms. He has led detailed geotechnical investigations, including frozen core drilling, CPTu soundings, vane testing, consolidation testing, and triaxial testing, to evaluate deformation features on filtered tailings stacks in permafrost regions and dams built on soft clay foundations. These investigations have supported tailings storage facility capacity increases and reclamation projects.
Additionally, Jean-François St-Laurent has been involved in preparing detailed engineering designs, plans, and specifications for various mining companies. He has also participated in peer reviews of mine waste management facility designs in Canada, Siberia, and Argentina.
