John Lomas Custom Furniture
John’s career as a custom furniture maker began in London 39 years ago, when he escaped from a dreary job in an office block overlooking the Thames. So began several years of study, beginning at the London College of Furniture and culminating with his graduation in antique restoration from the prestigious West Dean College in Sussex. Following a further year’s apprenticeship with a local antique dealer, John moved to the Cotswolds in the West of England to start a restoration business.
A few years later, in 1992, John moved across the water to take up residence in Vermont, where he has been designing and making furniture ever since. Over this last thirty year stretch, John started Cotswold Furniture Makers, bringing the business from a small shop to a 7,000 square foot facility with six craftspeople and two retail outlets in Stowe, VT and Great Barrington, MA.
In 2011, John made the decision to close Cotswold Furniture, “I realized that I was no longer making furniture, and wanted to return to my roots. The deteriotating economy presented an opportunity for change, so I made up my mind: It was time to come full circle, return to basics and work with my hands again.”
Today, John is once again the craftsman, working alone out of a workshop built with his own hands. It sits on his property in Hinesburg, VT a few yards from the family home. Today, with years of hands-on experience, John's goal remains unchanged: To make a significant and lasting contribution to the craft of custom furniture making and to share his passion for design and creativity with you. John lives with his wife and two dogs.
He hopes you will stop by for a visit.
