Huawei and Ericsson have entered a comprehensive long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement, encompassing patents essential to a broad spectrum of standards, including 3GPP, ITU, IEEE, and IETF standards for 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular technologies. This pact covers network infrastructure and consumer devices, enabling both companies to access each other's standardized patented technologies worldwide.
Alan Fan, Head of Huawei's Intellectual Property Department, noted that this agreement strengthens the patent environment, underscoring both firms' commitment to respecting and safeguarding intellectual property. Huawei, a significant contributor to ICT standards for over two decades, ranked first in the European Patent Office's 2022 applicant ranking with 4,505 applications.
The collaboration seeks to foster sustainable industry development, enhance product and service offerings, and create a more connected, intelligent world. This balanced approach to licensing underscores Huawei's role as both an implementer and holder of SEPs (standard essential patents). The agreement ensures fair representation of the interests of patent holders and implementers through intensive discussions.
