Description:
So the story goes, the 4th Earl of Sandwich was an avid gambler and often didn't leave the card table for many hours. To sustain him, he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread and it wasn’t long before his gambling buddies started ordering the same thing. Over 250 years later, the sandwich is one of the most popular foods in the world. From the Bahn Mi in Vietnam to the Philly Cheesesteak, there are countless varieties of breads and fillings that constitute a sandwich.
Spending most of my life in the USA, I’ve always seen the sandwich as a symbol of the great melting pot, with incredible varieties of sandwiches from region to region. In New York City, you have a long established deli culture that has been greatly influenced by Jewish, Italian, and many other immigrant food traditions. In New Orleans, you have the always satisfying Po’ Boy and imposing Muffaletta, created from French, Italian, and Creole influences. In Chicago, you have the Italian Beef - thin slices of roast beef served with au jus on French bread.
Without such a strong European immigrant influence in the USA, the sandwich as it exists there would never have happened. With Nate’s Deli, I’d like to show England how satisfying a good, American-style sandwich can be. All of our sandwiches are made with bread baked fresh every day. All of the fillings are homemade, from slow-cooked pork shoulder for our Mississippi Pulled Pork to crispy, thick-cut streaky bacon for the BLT. But be warned…these are not the small, pre-packaged sandwiches that you’re used to. Make sure you’ve got an appetite.
